A BRIGHT IDEA!

Shirlet Fowler is a Registered Nurse:
How can I tell patients to get more exercise if I
don’t do it myself? So I started a walking group.

We are now going 3 or more miles once or twice every day. My Aunt
has lost 10 pounds. Another’s cholesterol is under 200 now. We
all FEEL better! But we get more than that out of our workouts:

We talk about what’s going on…
Our walks are like group therapy!

Thanks to great walkability around my friend’s house we can
meet and go from there. Nobody wants to miss it or be late.
They’re getting real health benefits and having fun!

WE GET IN 10 OR MORE HOURS PER WEEK!
THIS IS “MODERATE TO VIGOROUS PHYSICAL ACTIVITY

Being active is fun. It burns fat and stress, and it helps prevent
diabetes, heart attacks, strokes and cancer. I try now to get at
least 2-3 hours of activity every week, more when we can as a
family. Can you be active too? Try setting a weekly medal goal:

"LITTLE DUDES"
ARE ACTIVE

"We want to give kids a healthy start in life!" Pat Smith runs her
preschool like a fitness camp: Children get led in 1 to 2 hours of real
active play every day, with plenty of time for free play too.

The playground has shaded areas and lots of fun things to play with and on.
The staff works hard to keep the children moving, outside and in.

How many preschools have yoga classes?
Little Dudes does all it can to build healthy lifestyles!

WATER, not SODA!!!

For their health, Rosemary and
Jessica McKnight only drink
soda on special occasions.

Rosemary McKnight has high
blood pressure and is taking
the right steps to control it.

One of them: Her family only
drinks soda on special occasions.
Instead they drink water,
orange water sometimes!

Rosemary puts an orange in her
blender & fills it with water:
70 calories instead of....
              500 in this much soda!

Recipe:
1 ORANGE
PEELED
SEEDED
WATER
BLEND
ADD ICE

Jessica loves it!
It’s not hard to say……
“NO SODA, THANK YOU!”

No sodas in the school week?

Not a problem for Jessica!

ACTIVE LIVING ON THE EAST SIDE!
Rosemary and Jessica McKnight don't just sit
around watching TV...for daughter it's Wii
Dance Revolution...for mother it's off to the
exercise boot camp at Dottie Jordan!

MARIE PROMISED HER
STUDENTS....NO SODAS...
two years and more now!

Two years ago the coach at Overton Elementary School, where Marie
Dilworth taught then, challenged students to give up soda and drink
water instead. She decided to challenge her own class by promising to
give up soda if they would. Marie's been soda-free since then with no
regrets! She just drinks water..."I've heard diet drinks also make you
fat and I just don't think they're good for you."

Easy to say, "No thanks!"
"I really prefer water!"

DIET SODAS? WORSE!
"Researchers in San Antonio believe diet sodas may be as bad or worse than sugared soda. Over 9 years, they found that the waistlines of folks who drank 2 or more diet sodas per day grew 5 times faster than those who drank no diet sodas."

DOCTOR’S RECOMMENDATION
No soda during the school week!

"I am Dr. Stephen Pont, Medical Director for the Austin Independent School District and Dell Children's Medical Center."

“Obesity is an epidemic in the U.S. and African Americans in
Travis County are represented in this unfortunate trend.
There are lots of things we need to do to fight obesity, and one
of the most simple and important is to stop giving ourselves and
children so much sugar sweetened soda and other drinks with
too much sugar! I'm urging families here to make promise to
no sodas during the school week. This will help your children's
learning and you whole family’s health.”

FLASH FORWARD: East Side Health Network Mobilization August 28

Alliance for African American Health - Austin, Texas
Marva Overton leads the Alliance for African American Health in Central Texas, a nonprofit community based organization formed to meet health challenges facing African Americans here

Healthy Living on the East Side will confront all of the major health challenges here, starting with obesity--which causes hundreds of excess deaths and very high rates of diabetes among African Americans.

Obesity is like an epidemic among African Americans here in Travis County and it is the single greatest cause of excess deaths here.

2/5 of African Americans are obese
1/5 of Whites are obese

Why are African American adults and children at high risk for obesity and the diseases it causes?

This is a huge and complicated problem with no single answer...

...but some things are obvious.

We should all drink:

Less soda and more water!

What do you think about the no soda during the school week challenge?

What are your ideas?

We welcome comments!

This project is supported by the Austin/Travis County Health & Human
Services Department (COMMUNITY TRANSFORMATION GRANT) and
coordinated by the University of Texas School of Public Health, Austin Regional Campus.
